What happened in 2020 hailstorm in Calgary?
We actually got on CTV in 2020, See us on CTV here
In June 2020, Calgary faced one of its most destructive hailstorms. That day started out like any other for us. We were outside, enjoying a barbecue, when we noticed the skies shifting. Thankfully, we managed to bring everything inside just as the wind picked up, giving little warning of what was to come. Moments later, the unmistakable sound of hail crashing against our home filled the air, a home we had only just purchased in August 2019. To make matters worse, the backyard of our townhouse still wasn’t landscaped, as we were waiting on the condo board’s final approval. The storm’s impact left its mark not only on our property but on countless homes across Calgary, reminding us of how quickly nature can change everything.
Our cats bolted to hide as the noise grew louder, a sound like gravel being thrown at full force against the house. My wife, noticing water pooling rapidly in our unlandscaped backyard, asked me to check the sump pump. I headed down to the basement, only to find water seeping through the window well. In that moment, it became clear that the storm’s intensity was testing every inch of our home’s defenses. The experience left us acutely aware of the importance of preparation and resilient home systems in the face of Calgary’s unpredictable weather.

To stop the water, we got to work with a small shop vac, trying to stay ahead of the flow. I remembered I had a backup carpet cleaning machine in the basement, which helped a lot; we ended up filling its 10-gallon waste tank three times. Fortunately, the basement was unfinished, so the damage was minimal. I called my father-in-law, who brought over a dehumidifier, and we bagged up the wet insulation. Afterward, we went outside to check the parking lot and saw the hail’s impact—dented cars and broken windshields everywhere.
I have a couple videos of the event in our home during the 2020 hailstorm
Looking back, this experience was just a glimpse into what would eventually become my career in restoration. At the time, I had no idea that dealing with hail and flood damage in my own home would lead me to a profession focused on helping others recover from similar disasters.
