Southern Alberta’s Soaked — And So Are Our Basements

Has it felt like it’s been raining non-stop lately?

You’re not the only one feeling it. Southern Alberta’s been hammered with back-to-back downpours, and we’ve hit the point where the ground just can’t take any more. Now, more and more homeowners are dealing with water in their basements — some for the first time ever.

And it’s not just a few isolated cases

Earlier this week, one of our local restoration equipment suppliers completely sold out of dry-down gear. That’s $150,000 worth of fans, dehumidifiers, and drying tools — gone in a single day. That gives you an idea of just how widespread this is.

“Why Now? My Basement’s Never Flooded Before.”

You’re not alone in asking that. The reality is, between saturated soil, aging infrastructure, overwhelmed sump pumps, and back-to-back storms, even homes that have never had water issues before are seeing seepage, leaks, and standing water.

We’ve had calls from:

People waking up to squishy carpet and that telltale musty smell,  Families discovering water pooling around furnace rooms or in cold storage, Rental units and finished basements where water’s soaked into drywall, trim, and personal storage.

It doesn’t take a major flood to cause a big headache. Even a small leak left too long can turn into mold, damage, and a lot of stress.

What You Can Do Right Now

If you think water might be getting in — or you’re already seeing signs of trouble — here’s what we recommend:

1. Check your sump pump. Make sure it’s running and discharging properly.

2.Extend downspouts as far from your foundation as possible.

3.Look for water pooling around your home, especially near window wells or low points.

4.Call sooner than later. If water’s in, don’t wait to deal with it.

And if your local hardware store or rental place is out of equipment? You’re not alone. We’ve seen it firsthand.
